Is meditation a cause of stress? Do you find it impossible to sit still whilst trying to meditate? Do thoughts constantly run through your head?

I once felt like that too. I didn’t get it – I was either thinking of other things or falling asleep!!

We all know that meditation is supposed to be a fantastic way to combat stress, but what if it is actually stressing you out?

Here’s a possible solution – Sudarshan Kriya – A Kriya Yoga breathing technique.

What is it?

A simple, rhythmic breathing technique, that can quickly reduce stress and increase both physical & emotional wellbeing.

How do we do it?

Ideally performed kneeling, but if that is uncomfortable to start, sit comfortably upright with both feet on the ground.

Ok – Here we go:

  1. Breathe in and out, naturally and relaxed. In and out breaths should be of equal length.

 

  1. Now change your exhalation to be twice as long as your inhalation.

 

  1. Lastly, change your inhalations to be twice as long as your exhalations.

You can fit this into the time you have available, so if you are short on time try 5 breaths of 1-3 above. You will feel relaxed and re-energized in less than 5 minutes! If you’ve got more time try for a little longer.

I’d build up, add a few more breath cycles each time you practice and just see how you feel.

You may find that being able to think about your breath, and counting the time of your breaths in and out bypasses that fidgety frustrated feeling that some of us feel when trying to meditate.
